Junior JAM(Children's Church) Week 1

John and I have taken on a new ministry at church and it is a Children's Church called Junior J.A.M. (Jesus and Me) during the main service. Here are some of the details:

Age Range: 4 years old-3rd grade
Curriculum: The Jesus Storybook Bible and supplemental materials
Schedule: Children are dismissed after the last song during the music time at church.
                 Bathroom/Water Break
Circle Time- memorize the Old Testament books of the Bible
"Wisdom Tree" Time- review questions from story last week; introduce the shorter catechism; Anticipatory activities for new story
DVD Presentation of The Jesus Storybook Bible
                  The Jesus Connection: explained later
                  Stations: 4s and 5s/ 1st-3rd
Station Teachers have a script that expands on the story and will include a craft, game, snack, etc.... that will reteach the story in a hands-on way. Bible verses are reviewed and incentives awarded as needed.
Parent Pick-Up: when we hear the music upstairs we know it is time to wrap up but while we are waiting they are working on a small activity to display in the room.

Here are pics of the room so far, it will become a lot more colorful after a few weeks of the children making "wallpaper" using the books of the Bible as a Parent Pick-Up activity.

The Jesus Connection Wall: This is the theme of the JSBB: Every story whispers His name, so here is a puzzle framed section of wall that we will continually add puzzle pieces on to spell, you guessed it: the name of Jesus. Every puzzle piece will have a theme of who Jesus is and how He is portrayed in the story. For example, our first week's puzzle piece says, "The Bible is ALL about Jesus!"

As soon as you enter, this section is to your left. The kids grab one of those thick block connecting mats and gather around for circle time on the concrete floor:) Also, our Bible verse for the day is written here for reference. Once I get a chalkboard decal this will replace it, this wall needs to pop a bit more!

I love trees in the classroom! This is the beginning of circle time where we will play review games and begin learning the shorter catechism. We will add leaves as we learn new information. We added 3 leaves the first week.

Week 1 Lesson: The Story and the Song
Verse: Psalm 19:1
The Jesus Connection: The Bible is ALL about Jesus!

This was our first week so we spent a lot of time on practicing some guidelines on how we can show LOVE to one another in our small classroom. Here is the visual we used:

Above the heart it says, "To Honor God and Show Love to other I will Have" and then the Bible verse to the side is Romans 12:10: "Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." We practiced every one of these and discussed how that brings unity in our classroom and what happens when someone is not doing one of these....

the heart breaks/the unity is broken. But we can choose to Honor God and each other by making these actions a habit in our own lives.

Wisdom Tree Time

Words of Wisdom Leaves:

Who wrote the Bible?
How many books in the Bible?
What are the two parts?

Sing "The B-I-B-L-E" but add this additional verse:

"The B-I-B-L-E written by God through man,
There are 66 books, the Old and New
The Bible is where I stand!"

DVD- Watch The Story and the Song

Puzzle Piece:

Add The Bible is all about Jesus to the puzzle wall.

Experiment: Teacher Script for Cloud in a Jar

The first video explains how all of creation sings out the song of God and that is all found in the Bible, and it does a wonderful job to set us up for the story of creation. Our Bible verse was Psalm 19:1 "The heavens declare the glory of God" so we discussed the wonder of the clouds in the sky and made a cloud in our classroom. Find out how to make one here: Cloud in a Jar.

The kids were hanging on John's every word:

Parent Pick-Up

While children waited on their parents they began working on an Old Testament bookmark I pinned a while back and now cannot find. That is when you know if you have WAY too many pins!!! :) Students take with them parent-info sheet that includes the story; Jesus connection; and Bible verse on it for review at home. Junior JAM template.
